Integrating nature into school landscapes – what are the benefits beyond aesthetics?

A greener school landscape should do more than look good from the front gate.

School grounds take a beating. Recess, lunch, PE, assemblies, before-school drop-offs, after-school waiting areas; the same spaces are used again and again, often in full sun. In Australia, that matters. An exposed courtyard can look fine on a plan and feel brutal by lunchtime.

Schools talk about sustainability a lot, and so they should! But it lands differently when students can see it working in their own grounds.

Vegetable gardens make food systems feel less abstract. These everyday details help students understand that landscapes are living systems, not just outdoor furniture with leaves.

Vegetable gardens, native planting, water-wise irrigation, composting areas and habitat zones can all play a role. The point isn’t to turn every square metre into a lesson; it’s to create a campus where curiosity has somewhere to go.

Landscapes that get better with age

Some parts of a school show wear quickly. Paint chips. Paving marks. Furniture gets scuffed. That’s school life. Good planting, though, can improve over time. Trees grow into proper shade.
