Ascot Vale

A relaxed outdoor space designed for entertaining. Great Spaces transformed a mid-size rear yard into a cohesive, poolside environment built for lifestyle and ease.

Brief

The project focused on refurbishing a rear yard positioned between the main residence, a rear garage, and a granny flat. A pool was installed, and the brief was to landscape the surrounding space into a functional, stylish entertaining area. The owners wanted a low-maintenance garden with strong planting, integrated outdoor living zones, and a design that would bring everything together.

Design

The design combined structure, planting, and material variation:

  • Entertaining hub: A louvred awning over the rear deck creates a flexible outdoor living space for year-round use.
  • Outdoor kitchen: A built-in barbecue area anchors the entertaining zone.
  • Material layering: Bluestone paving, crazy paving, and sliced stone pavers introduce texture and visual interest.
  • Pool integration: Glass fencing, seating, and surrounding planting soften the pool area while maintaining openness.
  • Rich planting palette: Native plants, ground covers, and feature pots with citrus bring life and variation to the space.

Construction

Works centred around integrating the pool into a cohesive landscape. Bluestone paving and crazy paving were installed to define circulation and entertaining zones, while the outdoor kitchen and deck area were constructed to support regular use.

A louvred awning was installed to provide adjustable shade and shelter, extending the usability of the outdoor space. Glass pool fencing was fitted to maintain clear sightlines while ensuring safety.

Planting was carefully layered throughout, combining natives, ground covers, and feature pots to create depth without increasing maintenance.

The result is a refined, highly usable outdoor space that connects each part of the property and delivers a relaxed, stylish setting for entertaining.
