Holy Rosary Primary School
Great Spaces was engaged to upgrade the playground at Holy Rosary Primary School, improving safety and compliance while introducing new spaces for outdoor learning and quieter play. The result is a safer, more versatile environment for students of all year levels.

Brief
The school wanted to bring its playground up to the latest safety compliance standards while improving the overall amenity of the space. Worn-out soft fall surfaces and play areas needed replacement, and the sandpit required renewal. In addition to safety, the staff sought to create a more peaceful outdoor area for older students, away from the school’s busy ball-sport zones.
Design
The design focused on practical improvements with added learning opportunities:
- Replacement of deteriorated rubber and synthetic soft fall surfaces to ensure compliance
- Renewal of the sandpit, creating a clean, contained play space
- Installation of a shade sail for comfort and UV protection
- Functional and attractive screening from neighbouring properties
- Creation of an outdoor classroom with natural log seating, giving teachers and students a new setting for lessons and group activities.

Construction
Work was scheduled during the school holidays, so the project was completed before students returned, minimising disruption. The team excavated and resurfaced soft fall areas, rebuilt the sandpit, and installed the new shade sail. Logs were carefully positioned to form a durable, natural seating circle for the outdoor classroom.
The result is a playground that is now safe, compliant, and more versatile. Younger children enjoy the renewed play areas, while older students benefit from a quieter, more reflective outdoor space. A Stage Two project is under consideration to further extend these calm, nature-inspired zones for older students.
